INTEGRATING NEW FEATURES TO AN EXISTING APP

Project Overview

ClassPass is a mobile fitness membership app that allows its users to book fitness classes from a wide variety of gyms, and studios. ClassPass wanted to increase bookings by its members to build a stronger community. They were exploring ways their users could motivate friends and family to take classes together to increase social engagement in the app.

SURVEY SCREENER AND INTERVIEWS

We created a survey screener to find as many current ClassPass members as we could as well as others who use different means of booking fitness classes. We interviewed 5 people in hopes that they might also agree to do usability tests later on. We had written up an interview script and asked each person the same questions. Here are a few key questions :

  1. Walk me through the process of booking a class on an app

  2. Who do you tend to go to fitness classes with?

  3. Describe to me the most recent time you took a fitness class with a friend.

  4. How did you communicate about the class?

  5. Has there ever been a time when you wanted to take a class with someone but couldn’t?

  6. How did you try to find people to take the class with you?

AFFINITY MAP- SYNTHESIZING DATA

We created an affinity map which helped us to gather common behavior, goals, needs, and pain points amongst all of the users we spoke to.

INSIGHTS

  • Some users enjoyed working out with friends.

  • Some were insecure about their workout abilities and didn’t like working out around a lot people.

  • They found it difficult to figure out their friends’ schedules and book classes based around their availability through the app.

  • Some users wanted to meet new people through these classes, but didn’t know how to go about it.

  • Inability to connect with people through the ClassPass app.

  • Inability to invite or sign up for classes with friends using the app instead of an outside means of communication.

PERSONAS

OUR PROBLEM STATEMENT

ClassPass users enjoy signing up for fitness classes together but lack the ability to communicate through the app, see other peoples schedules and meet new people.

How might we provide a sense of community and increase class bookings by improving social interactions within the app?

USABILITY TEST

USABILITY TEST 1.jpeg

OUR FINDINGS

  • It took the users a few tires to add a friend from barre class.

  • Users did not see the “ Add Friends” button clearly.

  • Users navigated the 2nd task easily as “joining a group” follows the same logic as “finding a friend."

  • All users looked to the feed for “finding a class with a working buddy.”

HI- FIDELITY ITERATIONS

TESTING HI-FI

  • Users scrolled past the “Add friend” button at first, but found it after exploring

  • Users scrolled past the “Join groups” button at first, but found it because it mimicked the “Add your friend” task.

  • Users found the Feed page too busy

  • All users were able to join a class with a friend “Looking for a buddy” through one of the two paths we placed. This task was failed in the previous iteration, proving that the changes made were effective.”

ITERATIONS

  • Changed “Requests” section on feed page to “Invites” for clearer categorization

  • Added boxes on the “Feed” page to better organize different feed sections

  • Noted on class pages when a friend was “Looking for a Buddy” to more clearly alert users

  • Edited the “Add Friends” and “Join Groups” buttons because the previous ones were too hard to see for many users
